I walked up to a 40-foot high fence, while noticing a small yellow sign in the peripheral. The sign said “Caution: High Voltage Fence.” It was made apparent that I was entering into what I could only understand as one of the many manifestations of an incarceration system. When I entered through the front door […]

A gifted student from North Carolina who was visiting family in Baltimore over the holidays, Barnes was scheduled to graduate early from high school. She did not have a history of running away or being a troubled child. The Phylicia Simone Barnes’ story is one of profound sadness and injustice on many levels. We know […]

Oh no! The folks back home will never stop smacking their lips over this one. As African American Studies grows across the nation, its scholarly diversity does not fall behind. Could white professors be added to the “things keeping Black people down” list? Possibly, but the fall of Black academia shouldn’t be instantly expected. Many […]

Today is MLK Day, and if you’re lucky, you’re chilling in bed reading this on your smartphone.  Or perhaps you’re not reading this at all.  And that’s cool.  Rosa Parks didn’t refuse to give up her seat on a bus for you to be reading blogs on your vacation day. For those who are reading […]

One of the greatest phrases I’ve learned in graduate school is “not being bound by the text.”  Essentially, the term serves as a euphemism –and excuse–for not reading the assignment while simultaneously validating whatever jargon-soaked comment(s)  one might offer during class discussion, because the folks who read have had their thinking narrowed by the words […]

Tuesday night was a big night for me. NBA Season has officially started and the league did the thing right, didn’t they? Boston-Miami to kick it off, to finally put an end to all of the hoop-la. The stage was set perfectly. In the weeks leading up to this shining moment in NBA history, NBA.com […]
