A Los Angeles woman who was severely beaten by a CHP police officer on the side of a freeway is speaking out. Marlene Pinnock said she feared for her life as the officer pummeled her during an incident that was captured on a cell phone video. 

A jury convicted a suburban Detroit man of second-degree murder and manslaughter on Thursday in the killing of a 19-year-old unarmed woman who sought help after a car wreck on his porch last year. Theodore Wafer claimed self-defense and said that he feared for his life. 

Film director Spike Lee has erected a memorial outside his Fort Greene studio for Eric Garner, the 43-year-old father of six who died while being arrested by police in Staten Island. Garner died on July 18 after police placed him in a chokehold, an illegal move, for selling loose cigarettes.

The incident provoked outrage last month after a witness filmed police placing Eric Garner in an illegal choke hold while arresting him for selling cigarettes illegally.

  ESPN has suspended outspoken sportscaster Stephen A. Smith for remarks the television host made about domestic violence on Friday. Smith appears on the network’s show “First Take.” In addition to being suspended from the television show, Smith is also banned from making appearances on ESPN Radio for one week. 

  A Change.org petition is calling for the U.S. government to acknowledge slaves with a memorial. The petition, created by Craig Nessan, urges representatives to construct an African American slave memorial to acknowledge the contributions, trials and tribulations of our ancestors to the country.
