While the #blackgirlsrock hashtag was ablaze on Twitter, a very unsurprising backlash about the event was also in the midst. But one white activist is defending Black Girls Rock, and points out some very good examples of why it’s necessary.
Earlier today, we posted about the bullying issues surrounding the NFL’s Miami Dolphins. Now, news outlets are reporting that Richie Incognito, the alleged ring leader, used racial epithets while bullying Jonathan Martin.
Jonathan Martin is a 6-foot-5 315 pound offensive tackle for the Miami Dolphins. Several days ago, however, Martin left the Dolphins’ practice facility and hasn’t returned. Now, reports are coming in that Martin was the target of bulling and abuse from teammates.
When Brooklyn Wright was just 7-years-old, she wrote her first book. “The Adventures of the Earth Saver Girl” was meant to inspire children her age to learn about the importance of protecting the planet. Now, the young writer has another achievement to place under her belt. She was recently honored at the 8th annual “Black Girls Rock!” Awards.
Funny man Kevin Hart has decided to give back to his hometown of Philadelphia. The city has been in the news recently for its financial woes, which has resulted in many schools closing and other severe budget cuts.
“The Maroon Tiger,” Morehouse College’s student newspaper, has released their version of ESPN’s “The Body Issue” in response to apprehension of HBCUs when discussing issues related to black sexuality and bodies. Out of the college’s 146 year existence, just last year the institution started to open up about black sexuality by adding a LGBT studies course to its curricula.
The United States Department of Justice has announced that it has opened a formal review of the death of 17-year-old Kendrick Johnson on Thursday. Johnson was found rolled up in a wrestling mat at his Georgia high school in January. The death was ruled an accident by police.
