For the most part, educational institutions have closed their doors due to the extremely cold weather in the midwest. Students attending The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign weren’t so lucky.

Alarming figures about the state of our economy in regards to teenagers have been released. In Chicago, ninety-two percent of African American male teenagers are unemployed. Overall, eighty-three percent of black male teens in the country are without a job.

A new Illinois law will hopefully curb the student-to-prison pipeline in the state requires 17-year-olds to be turned over to the juvenile courts instead of adult law facilities. The law sets the bar for felony prosecution to age 18. 

Rev. Al Sharpton seems to be keeping his promise of placing a spotlight on Chicago violence. During a town hall meeting on Thursday at Hyde Park Academy on the city’s south side, Sharpton and other leaders echoed the notion that jobs are the key to reducing crime in the city.

A man who spent 30 years in prison for a crime he did not commit is free. Stanley Wrice says Chicago police beat a confession of a 1982 rape out of him. According to Cook County prosecutors, Wrice is not only free, but will not be retried for the crime.

On Wednesday, Chicago Public Schools officials announced the launching of a comprehensive black studies program that will be rolled out next month. The program expands education on black history beyond that of prominent black leaders, civil rights and the slave trade, which is currently being taught in public schools.

The Illinois Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission has filed a complaint against a Williamson County State’s Attorney for “appealing to racial prejudices” during a murder trial. The complaint states that Charles Garnati violated four rules of professional conduct during a July 2011 murder trial.
