161 years after its mistake, the New York Times has printed a correction for misspelling the name of a black man sold into slavery.  Solomon Northup, a free slave tricked into slavery is the man who the Oscar-winning film “12 Years a Slave” is based on. 

Lupita Nyong’o delivered a tear-filled speech as she accepted an award at Essence magazine’s seventh annual Women in Hollywood luncheon. The 30-year-old star has been receiving a wave of attention for her astonishing role in the critically-acclaimed film 12 Years a Slave. During her speech, Nyong’o made a confession that many dark skinned women can attest to. 

Georgia officials have approved a license plate featuring the Confederate flag, angering civil rights advocates. The Georgia division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans requested the new plate design. 

Last week musician Nicki Minaj came under fire for the use of an image of iconic civil rights leader Malcolm X to promote her new single. Minaj has since apologized for the act, but some members of X’s estate still aren’t pleased. 

Racial justice advocates want to have an open dialogue about race relations in the country. They’re doing just that by hosting their 15th annual “National White Privilege” conference in March. The conference hopes to highlight race issues locally by examining white privilege in daily living. 

Despite increased efforts to secure schools in the country, the number of school shootings have virtually remained unchanged. An analysis conducted by the Associated Press found that at least 11 school shootings have occurred this academic school year alone. Those numbers are separate from other cases of gun violence. 

  Some members of Arizona State University’s chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity may face expulsion after throwing a racist MLK-themed party during the slain civil rights leader’s holiday weekend. Only 16 of 125 members attended the offensive party, but the action has led to the dissolution of the chapter on campus.

Doctors are warning that if Congress cuts food stamps, the federal government could face increases in health bills. The experts say that while the consequence may not be felt immediately, over time the poor will wind up in doctors’ offices and/or hospitals as a result of the cuts. 

Matthew Desmond, a Harvard assistant professor who studies poverty, housing and eviction, found that 1 in 14 black residents in Milwaukee renting households is evicted each year. The proportion does not include the number of families whose lives are disrupted by involuntary displacement.
