Who Do You Serve? "Occupy Wall St." Met with "Occupy the People's Rights"
I’ve grown up hearing stories from my parents, many of which were about their political activism, and many of which highlighted the lack of police support the experienced. In the summer of 1975, my dad participated in a desegregation protest on a beach in Boston where blacks had been excluded. While some protesters threw rocks, […]

No, the Government Does Not Want Your Guns
Remember when last month NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre talked about the,”massive Obama conspiracy to deceive voters and hide his true intentions to destroy the Second Amendment in our country”? Yeah, I’m thinking he was a little off. Sadly, paranoid gun talk and fear is how the NRA recruits new members, but his whole […]
THE FOOTAGE: 700 OCCUPY WALL STREET Protestors Arrested At Brooklyn Bridge
The news media wants us focused on the back-and-forth, he said-she said, GOP Presidential nomination bullshit, so they’re burying this kind of footage amid other relatively mundane headlines. Go figure. But anybody with a brain, and some level of frustration with corporate greed and political corruption, knows that the biggest and most fascinating story in […]
NEWS FLASH: Rick Perry Kills 'em With Crazy, Slavery: The Game, And Mos Def's Name Change
September 8, 2011 So that crazy, ragtag squad of Republican Presidential Candidates actually debated last night. And we live-tweeted the whole thing. And it was hilarious. And the media seems to have chosen Rick Perry as the night’s clear victor, which is even more hilarious. Perry’s unique brand of crazy was in full force last […]
Nostalgia for Activist
Over the past couple of months I have been working for an Organization called Equal Education, more commonly known as the movement of and for learners, parents, teachers and community members working for quality and equality in education, through analysis and activism. I humbly declare that the activism and community leadership that I’ve seen over […]

For the next few days the students are holding a “sleep-in” to ask for better infrastructure in their schools. These young people who are inspired by both the anti-apartheid movement and […]
Civil Disobedience, Gay Rights Movements, and the Black Single Mothers Who Don’t Benefit From Marriage
Silje Sande an American Professor, discusses something called “The Necessary Tension.” She writes “In a democracy the tension between civil obedience and disobedience is a necessary tension.” She argues that Civil Disobedience confronts and holds accountable the norms that exist in society today. I think that black single mothers and families around the country should […]
Officers who kick ASS (and ask questions, Never)
Can you imagine being five years old and having three cops bend you over a desk, handcuff you and then carry you out of your school in handcuffs? Can you imagine being face down on the floor, hands behind you, some cops knee on your neck; then to have that knee migrate to your back […]
All That War Sh** Is For The Birds: Obama & Libya
In just under 30 minutes President Barack Obama gave what Dr. Melissa Harris-Perry called “a mix of Just War Theory and classic University of Chicago IR-Realist Theory.” In a standard black suit, with a modified spread collar, and crimson colored tie, the former law school lecturer had the uniform that symbolized blood and war (red […]
The Dark Continent: The Criminalization of the Poor
Abahlali baseMjondolo or the Shack Dwellers movement began almost six years ago in Durban, South Africa. Abahlali has become (according to their website) the “largest organization of the poor” in post-apartheid South Africa. The organization was solidified through their first protest. This protest was a “road blockade organized from the Kennedy Road settlement” to speak […]
