49 year-old Tonya Battles alleges that a hospital in Michigan granted a man’s request that no black nurses care for his newborn. Hospital supervisors say the man was openly white supremacist, and that they feared for the nurses’ safety.
Police chose to inform Georgia mother Anna Lamb-Creasey of her son’s death via Facebook. The message wasn’t even from an official police Facebook account. Due to the confusion, it took 20 days for her to learn the truth about her son’s whereabouts. Horrible.

Another former LAPD officer has released his own manifesto. Former officer Joe Jones, who is also black, released a statement that echoes Christopher Dormer’s claim of racism within the LAPD. Although Jones does not support Dormer’s tactics, he says he understands:

The government of Uruguay has remixed the gun buy back program. The new program, called Weapons for Life, allows Uruguayans to receive things like bicycles and computers in exchange for turning in their guns. Kind of an amazing idea, right?
7 year-old Wilson Reyes was accused of stealing $5 from a classmate, and a scuffle ensued. Instead of being sent to the principal’s office, the NYPD took him to a police station, handcuffed Reyes to a wall, and interrogated him for hours.
While addressing the National Newspapers Association, Rep. Alcee L. Hastings said that President Obama disrespects the black community. Do you agree? Will a second term be the directive Obama needs to address the concerns of Hastings and others?
Tennessee state rep Stacey Campfield introduced a bill that would make welfare benefits contingent upon the grades of a recipient’s children, insisting it will hold parents accountable. But it sounds like another attack on poor people, and seems totally heartless and unfair. What do you think?
