httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbdxeFcQtaU I often hear that as a society we need to learn to confront racism and talk about both race and racism head-on, but sometimes I wonder if any of us really know how to talk about racism. And I don’t mean in the academic way that delineates the effects of racism in its many […]

Within the black community, many critics would answer with a surprising “no”. Historically, African Americans especially since the Civil Rights Movement have been loyal to the Democratic Party for its social welfare programs and professed strife for equality. However, as Ron Christie, Republican strategist and former special assistant to President George W. Bush puts it […]

I’ve gotten the chance to hear a few speeches from a few “great” leaders of today, and I have a slight reservation about what I’ve been hearing. If you ask me, there are two types of great leaders and they give two types of great speeches.             The first kind of […]

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIiK62AY-yU In California, the fight for equality in marriage continues. Even though I have conflicting thoughts about marriage in general, I still believe that homophobia and intolerance is what drives decisions like prob 8. These issues as we all know, are nothing new. And many of the remnants of homophobia are just as strong in the black community as […]

“I’m a Democrat. But I believe what Republican Abraham Lincoln believed: That Government should do for people only what they cannot do better by themselves, and no more. That’s why my education reform offers more competition, and more control for schools and States.” In President Obama’s state of the Union address, education was one of his […]

Growing up as a child certain things were told to me by older people, I listened to some and the rest of it went in one ear and out the other. It is hard being a man and even harder being a black man. It is very prevalent stereotypes that are associated with being a […]

According to a recent report, the achievement gap between white teenagers and their minority counterparts continues to widen, with Black and Latino students performing at levels equal to or lower than those of 30 years ago. What will it take to close the achievement gap for minority students in America?

So I’m sick and tired of conversations about the state of Black youth ending with the same played-out solutions—restoring strong family values. Now don’t get me wrong, of course family is important, but we are mistaken if we think that broken homes are the main factors fueling gang violence. If we should blame anything it should […]

This past week I had the opportunity to attend two great events on the south side. A showing of the Kartemquin film, The Interrupters, and an all day event dedicated to youth activism past and present, which included a showing of The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975. Both events were well attended by both community members and college […]

I work at the Chicago House and Social Service Agency as an intern for my masters. At this placement I teach students that have been impacted by poverty, HIV/AIDS, an educational crisis and other systemic issues. I have been notified that in this environment many of the students have been diagnosed with learning, behavioral, and […]
