Members of Arkansas’ Supreme Court tossed out a judge’s ruling to strike down the state’s voter ID law on Wednesday. In a 5-2 ruling, justices vacated the Pulaski County judge’s decision that the law violates the state’s constitution.Â
Yesterday, Ras Baraka claimed the mayoral seat of Newark, NJ. Baraka, a councilman and activist, beat law professor Shavar Jeffries for the seat left vacant by Cory Booker, who is now a senator in Washington. Baraka won 54% of the vote.
A federal judge struck down Wisconsin’s voter-ID law Tuesday, saying it violated the Voting Rights Act and the Constitution. The law had already been previously blocked by a state judge.Â
Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a law passed by voters in Michigan that banned consideration of race in the public college admissions process. Eight states have passed laws restricting affirmative action since 1996, despite the racial makeup of college students and graduates evolving.Â
The Supreme Court ruled that a Michigan initiative that bans racial preferences in college admissions is constitutional, overturning a lower court decision. The measure is expected to appear on this year’s ballot.Â
