First Lady Michelle Obama is slated to reveal a proposal Tuesday that would ban the promotion of junk food and sodas in schools. The announcement comes as part of an event celebrating the 4-year anniversary of Obama’s “Let’s Move” health and wellness campaign.

Parents of students attending a New York school are outraged after finding out their children were banned from writing about iconic civil rights leader Malcolm X.  The assignment, given to fourth graders attending Public School 201 in Flushing, did not permit students to write about X because he was “violent” and “bad.” 

A 17-year old North Carolina high school student has made history by becoming the first transgender teen crowned Homecoming King in North Carolina. Senior Blake Brockington was nominated by his peers this year to be East Meck High School’s 2014 Homecoming King. The announcement was made during the halftime ceremony inside the school gym Friday night.

Despite increased efforts to secure schools in the country, the number of school shootings have virtually remained unchanged. An analysis conducted by the Associated Press found that at least 11 school shootings have occurred this academic school year alone. Those numbers are separate from other cases of gun violence. 

Dr. Michael V. Drake has been named president of Ohio State University. This marks the first time that the state’s largest university system will be headed by an African American. Drake is the 15th president of the system. 

One of New York City’s most prestigious prep schools has apologized after screening a satirical movie about slavery. The Dalton School showed “C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America” to sophomores at a presentation of history projects on Monday. The movie portrayed the south as the winners of the Civil War and treated slavery as comical.
