By Tongo Eisen-Martin Grip my heart tighter, Lord, help me write on this sleeve…  I build a criminal organization and crow/trying to make some kind of sense of art and my murder           Talk scientifically to my siblings                  Talk scientifically to Dante’s […]

Today, the ruling class and their millions of shock troops maintain their power with what must be a really enjoyable racism. Stream-lined fascist accomplice-ing, in mass, perpetually starves the resistance of having people who would actually populate resistance. Corporate-hired artists scribble sunshine on cop tires. The U.S. publicly and privately contracts construction of new concentration […]

Seems like every year I learn some new factoid about how plantations operated during the time of chattel slavery of African peoples in the Americas. I inevitably come across another unfortunate piece of knowledge that I wish I never had to know. At the same time, I always understand how it’s of vital importance that […]

by Donnie Moreland Most folk respond to the words, “I have a Master’s degree in film studies” with either, “What can you do with that?” or the more biting, “What’s the point of that?” Funny thing is that for much of my program, I asked the same questions. It’s when films such as Queen and […]

by Donnie Moreland  This essay mentions domestic violence.  August Wilson once noted, “The blues are important primarily because they contain the cultural expression and the cultural response to blacks in America and to the situation that they find themselves in.” I believe this to be true, in so far as the Blues may no longer […]

By Caroline Colvin For a subset of society whose bodies are so sexualized, so desired, and so sought-after, Black women and femmes as a whole feel a substantial amount of shame when it comes to our sexuality. When you’re a Black woman or femme, pop culture encourages you to be the video vixen — or, […]

by Andrew Keahey I can remember the exact moment that hip-hop and the horror genre intersected for me. I was spending the night with a friend. We had played some games and listened to the local chart-topper radio station, then he suggested we watch The Fly (1986). I recall telling him that I wasn’t sure […]

by Josie Pickens dream hampton’s Lifetime documentary, Surviving R. Kelly, continues to make Black folks do some serious soul searching and unpacking around the kinds of sexual violence too many of us have experienced in our families and connected communities. For Black women especially, much of the mental and emotional heavy-lifting has involved recalling our […]

Not enough people know about Bois Caïman. I only learned of it myself within the last few years. Even among those of us who are familiar with the 18th century slave rebellion that led Haiti (once called Saint-Domingue) to its independence from French colonial rule, some do not know that this insurrection began with a […]

By Gloria Oladipo Being around family for the various holidays this year has reminded me a lot of religion, specifically Christianity, which has been in my life since childhood. Rules based on Christian teachings were foundational to my upbringing. Using the Bible’s critique of witchcraft, my parents banned Harry Potter from our house. I wasn’t […]

This essay contains discussions of sexual violence, including sexual harassment, assault, and pedophilia. In 2013, Pope Francis said that the Catholic Church needed to “act decisively” against predators in the church, ensure that they are rightfully punished, and protect children from sexual abuse. A call for his resignation is now gaining momentum after he was […]

by Briana Lawrence Self reflection is… weird. You’re sitting there, drinking a cup of coffee out of your favorite mug (mine being a Tetris themed mug with the words “EPIC FAIL” plastered on them since the pieces aren’t put together properly — it’s me in a nutshell). You’re sitting there, minding your own beeswax when, […]
