The Obama administration made public recommendations on how both public and private entities can participate in the White House’s “My Brother’s Keeper” initiative on Friday. The initiative is meant to support men and boys of color, and includes a move that focuses on summer jobs and mentoring. 

According to the blog Crew of 42, a rule change the Obama Administration’s initiative, My Brother’s Keeper, which is aimed at helping young black men, will prevent black civic organizations from participating in the initiative. The organization 100 Black Men of America has written a letter of concern.

In response to Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s proposed “tough on crime” strategy, specifically Senate Bill 1342, members of BYP 100 and Project Nia have collaborated to create a youth jobs bill. Senate Bill 1342, now House Bill 5672, included a minimum sentence of one to three years for any person caught with an illegal weapon. 

  BYP 100’s National Coordinator Charlene Carruthers is making moves. Most recently the young activist and leader made AARP’s “11 Civil Rights Leaders Under 50.”
