The Architecture of Removal: Black Immigrants, Disappearance, and the Politics of Survival in the United States
by Amber Butts Immigration policy in the United States has always enforced racial hierarchy, and the Trump administration further developed an aggressive removal process against Black immigrants. Expanded policing partnerships, broader detention authority, and rhetoric that cast immigrants as criminals and predators created conditions that pushed Black immigrants into detention and deportation at strikingly disproportionate […]
We have to recognize the dangers of “male-identified” womanhood
by Jenn M. Jackson, PhD A few weeks ago, I posted on Threads about the ways that male-identified women are harmful to building community. I said this in reference to the numbers of Black women who work tirelessly defending Black men like Chris Brown, Bill Cosby, Sean “Diddy” Combs, and so many others who commit […]
Teen Vogue and the Fallacy of Radical Political Performance
by Jenn M. Jackson, PhD In August 2017, I received a text message from a dear friend. The text read, “Hey darling, would you be interested in writing a 800 – 1000 word piece about white women’s role in white supremacy for Teen Vogue? They reached out to me about it but I’d rather pass […]
In the Wake of ‘The Trayvon Generation’
by Jenn M. Jackson, PhD When I found out that George Zimmerman, the white-passing, mixed race Latinx man who killed Trayvon Martin on February 26th, 2012, was acquitted of all charges, I was sitting in a massive auditorium of Black women, all members of my sorority, Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. In the United States, police kill over 1,000 and injure more than 51,000 people each year, with evidence suggesting that these figures could be underreported by as much as 55%. In addition to these numbers being substantially higher than other developed nations, unfortunately, they are also plagued by biases and systematic failures which disproportionately affect […]
Beneath the Surface
By Cai Thomas Trina Reynolds-Tyler and the Labor of Uncovering There is a kind of story that lives in silence. These are stories deliberately hidden inside systems, obscured by bureaucratic language, mislabeled in public records, or buried deep within data sets that were never meant to be read closely. They do not reveal themselves […]

Not long into former President Barack Obama’s second term, the goal of the gathering […]
