Yesterday tragedy struck America once again when 34-year-old Navy Contractor Aaron Alexis entered a Washington, D.C. Navy Yard Monday morning. Armed with an AR-15 military-style assault rifle, a double-barreled shotgun and a handgun, Alexis killed 12 people before being gunned down by police.

According to the Black Youth Project’s latest memo, “Gun Violence and Public Opinion on Gun Control among America’s Young People,” youth of color experience higher levels of gun violence and report greater support for increased gun restrictions compared with their white peers.

Chicago-area white supremacist Brian James Moudry has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for setting the home of an African American family on fire. Moudry splashed the house with gasoline and lit it ablaze while eight children and one adult were inside. Luckily, all were able to escape.

An organization called Detroit’s Youth Voice have organized a march this Saturday to “break the School-to-Prison Pipeline.” Great to see young people taking to the streets and making their voices heard regarding such an important issue.

A controversial ad urging black youth in Boston to pull up their sagging pants is raising eyebrows. Penalties apparently include a $300 fine and up to three years in prison! Is it fair to incarcerate a young person over sagging pants? Is that how we look out for our youth?

In the wake of the terrible massacre in Newtown, Conneticut, Democrats (and many Republicans) are pushing for the return of an assault weapons ban. Would such a ban go far enough?
