A 8th grader’s incendiary essay comparing modern public education to slavery is causing a firestorm of controversy in her upstate New York community. The essay infuriated teachers and administrators at her school, who launched a campaign of harassment against the young lady.

With its theatrical release set for next month, American Promise aims to shed some light into the life of a young black man in America. The documentary focuses on two middle class black families as they raise their sons. It’s goal is to empower boys, their parents and educators and help close the black male achievement gap.
For the past seven years, Urban Prep Charter Academy has managed to send 100% of its students to four-year colleges. Given that the school’s student body is predominately young black men on Chicago’s South Side, it’s a refreshing story that rarely gets old.Â
