Opening the Door of Return
By Norrell Edwards, PhD The hypnotic pale blue waves crash against large grey stones; it’s so peaceful—it’s easy to forget we’re at the site of unimaginable historic violence. With my students scattered around me, I stand on haunted ground, Cape Coast Slave Castle and Dungeon. We’re just a few footsteps from centuries old cannons, right […]
The Dead Cannot Correct Them: Grief, Repressions, and Life in the US
By: Amber Butts There’s always a reason the dead had to die. This country is very practiced at explaining itself, searching the dead for a reason before it admits to killing them, rifling through whatever they left behind. Alex Pretti was thirty-seven years old, an ICU nurse in Minneapolis protesting federal immigration raids when […]
The Architecture of Removal: Black Immigrants, Disappearance, and the Politics of Survival in the United States
by Amber Butts Immigration policy in the United States has always enforced racial hierarchy, and the Trump administration further developed an aggressive removal process against Black immigrants. This Didn’t Begin With Us
Creative expression did not begin with writing. It began with voice — with stories spoken across rooms, songs carried across distance, rhythms tapped into tabletops and knees when words alone could not hold what needed to be said. Comic: Allies, respect that some spaces aren’t for you
by JeCorey Holder As discourse bubbles over a white cosplayer winning first place at a Black Nerd convention (something that I, in my naive sliver of optimism, am still hoping was a misunderstanding), my mind falls upon the white allies who celebrate Black people having our own spaces… Only to swerve well out of their […]

Now is an opportunity for Black folks to reimagine what constitutes loss
by Donnie Moreland My father is a diabetic, with chronic pain and a fragile immune system due to rounds of dialysis, which cause more pain and thus tosses him into the throws of a cycle which is, observably, hell. He is also a business owner, which necessitates an urgency of decision making, that suffers when […]

‘Seeking for the Lost’ and the project of finding each other as a misplaced people
by Donnie Moreland “We hummed a celebration for living. For fighting. For refusing to die. For enduring when giving up would be easier.
