Many thought the lack of diversity in the 87th Academy Awards in 2015 and the #OscarsSoWhite social media campaign that followed would be a sufficient wake up call. The last thing that anyone expected was that the 88th Academy Awards would take a major step in the wrong direction when it was already so far behind.
With all of the conversation surrounding the lack of support that Hollywood has for black actors and actresses, especially during award season (see: #OscarsSoWhite), it seems that it may be worse in the United Kingdom.
For the second year in a row, the annual Oscars ceremony will be unmistakably…white. The Academy Award nominations were announced early Thursday morning. Snubs, no doubt, are expected. Upsets happen. But in the midst of growing criticism for Hollywood’s lack of diversity, it’s hard not seeing this year’s nominations as egregious erasure.
