This past Saturday I did what no child looks forward to. I attended my mother’s funeral. Upon returning home to Cleveland I wasn’t sure how I was going to react to the various situations: being in my mom’s old room, the one she died in, viewing her body for the first time at the funeral […]

One of the greatest phrases I’ve learned in graduate school is “not being bound by the text.”  Essentially, the term serves as a euphemism –and excuse–for not reading the assignment while simultaneously validating whatever jargon-soaked comment(s)  one might offer during class discussion, because the folks who read have had their thinking narrowed by the words […]

It’s a problem that we still allow ignorance to turn cultures into threats and let fear change constitutional rights into a compromise of sanctity or national security. It is moments like this that I am most disappointed to be human, to be American, the moments when people choose to not allow others to live freely. […]

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IoLHtzHvyQk&feature=player_embedded So, am I the only one who finds the YouTube’s “viralization” (yes, I made up a word) of the Bed Intruder Song deeply unsettling and problematic? httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYHguBEXkac I wrote this blog literally a year ago today. It was not a published blog because the Black Youth Project had yet to premier online. When I tell people that I am learning sign language the most popular response that I get is “why?” Or other people have laughed and called me a slacker for not taking a “real” language. It is amazing how ignorance can cause people to dismiss a whole culture of people.  I believe I can identify […]

“Are you doing your part?” and “Save the planet.” During Earth Week, we’ll being hearing a lot of these phrases, both part of “going green” and saving our worn down environment. But hey…why is the focus of this wildfire movement limited to the abused natural resources? Don’t get me wrong I am all for living […]

How the Black Eyed Peas shamelessly sold out…and why it was the best idea EVER.

I’ve always been a fan of Dwayne Carter Jr. Before Young Money Entertainment existed, before all the Carter albums, and even before the “bling bling” phenomena I liked Weezy.  The pint-sized rapper from Hollygrove, New Orleans had a guttural delivery that was edgy and catchy at the same time. I can recall watching Hot Boys […]

I’m getting old. No, my hearing isn’t fading, my sight isn’t any worse than normal and my bones don’t creak but I’m aging. I know this because my sports heroes are all in their twilight years. It hurts me to watch Kevin Garnett and Allen Iverson as they slip out of their respective primes and […]
