      Members of the BYP 100’s Chicago chapter joined hundreds in protest of the “school-to-prison” pipeline Monday evening. Activists marched from Lawndale to the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center.

  Vernita Gray, activist and one half of Illinois’ first same-sex couple to legally marry in the state has died. Gray succumbed to a long battle with brain and bone cancer. She was 65.

In response to Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s proposed “tough on crime” strategy, specifically Senate Bill 1342, members of BYP 100 and Project Nia have collaborated to create a youth jobs bill. Senate Bill 1342, now House Bill 5672, included a minimum sentence of one to three years for any person caught with an illegal weapon.

A new Illinois law will hopefully curb the student-to-prison pipeline in the state requires 17-year-olds to be turned over to the juvenile courts instead of adult law facilities. The law sets the bar for felony prosecution to age 18.
