T.G.I.T.T.B. (Thank God It's The Token Blacky)
What’s scarier than a racist that calls out “nigger” or “coon” viciously? The racist who’s night you save by being the “token blacky”. I pose two disappointments for the eager audience at a non-black party: no weed and no freestyle. Still I manage to be the life of the party, dougieing on every song, judging […]
The latest black example: Kelley Williams-Bolar
I grew up in Chicago with a mom that was overzealous about education. By the time I was twelve, I’d gone to seven different schools. I went to one school for Kindergarten, two schools for first grade, I was home-schooled halfway through second grade and then started at a new school where I stayed for […]
The Dark Continent: Youth, Jail, and Electric Fences
I walked up to a 40-foot high fence, while noticing a small yellow sign in the peripheral. The sign said “Caution: High Voltage Fence.” It was made apparent that I was entering into what I could only understand as one of the many manifestations of an incarceration system. When I entered through the front door […]

Porn, Poverty, Public Health and the Pursuit of Happiness
For many, it is hard to have open conversations about vaginas, penises, and anuses, especially when ‘beavers,’ ‘one-eyed snakes’ and ‘poop-chutes’ play bump in the [supposed] night. Even when we talk about “them” bumping in the night, many of us create euphemisms to get around the discomfort of talking about sex. So you can imagine […]
Curren$y vs. Wiz Khalifa: An N.F.L. Matchup
Curren$y the “Hot Spitta” and Wiz Khalifa have a lot in common. They both have an affinity for climbing psychedelic trees (JETS and Paper Plane Gang should be self-explanatory). They both bounced around record labels for a while before they blew up. Both of them graced XXL Mgszine’s Top Freshman cover (Curren$y in ’09 and […]
F.O.P. – Funds Owed Pittsburgh

By now people all over the country have witnessed the brutal beating of honor student and violist Jordan Miles by Pittsburgh Police officers Michael Saldutte, David Sisak and Richard Ewing. Jordan was walking to his grandmother’s house when he was approached by the officers, who jumped out of an unmarked car in plain clothes demanding “Where’s the gun? Where are the drugs?” Jordan, who has no criminal record and thought he was being robbed, ran. Unfortunately, the “police officers” caught him, and all three beat 5’6’’ 150 pound Jordan until he looked like this. Yep, they even ripped out part of his hair. Of course they found no guns or drugs, but still proceeded to charge Jordan Miles with loitering, aggravated assault, and resisting arrest.

Those extremely bogus charges were dismissed because officers Michael Saldutte, David Sisak and Richard Ewing basically filed a false police report. They claimed they got a call from a neighbor, Monica Wooding, who said Jordan was loitering on her property. Ms. Wooding not only testified, under oath, that she didn’t make the complaint, but also she has known Jordan, “for years.”

The Sweetest Thing
I cannot quit Lauryn Hill. Several days ago, if you had asked me what I might entitle my post-Hill Chicago show blog, I would have said something like “Ex-Factor,” “Lost One,” or “Losing Lauryn.” Instead, I sit here, after witnessing my first Lauryn Hill show in years, having named this entry after my favorite Lauryn […]
Beyonce Signs On For "A Star Is Born" Remake, Clint Eastwood In Talks To Direct
Our girl Beyonce is reportedly set to star in yet another musical. And although we’d love it if B showed maybe just little bit more range in her acting roles (Am I the only one that was begrudgingly entertained by Obsessed?), this latest foray onto the big screen might be the role she’s been waiting […]
On the Use of "Honor Student": Phylicia Barnes’ Disappearance
A gifted student from North Carolina who was visiting family in Baltimore over the holidays, Barnes was scheduled to graduate early from high school. She did not have a history of running away or being a troubled child. The Phylicia Simone Barnes’ story is one of profound sadness and injustice on many levels. We know […]
The world is still anti-gay
When I was 13 years old, I had a crush on my one of my teachers. She was a woman. She was 50 years old. I told her I liked her and she told me she was married. Bummers. Anyway, I’m sure this is rich with Freudian issues but I also believe it was the […]
