Peter Liang was a rookie NYPD officer walking the stairs of the Pink Houses in New York City. After hearing a noise, he drew his gun, pulled his trigger after being startled and the bullet ricocheted and hit Akai Gurley, 28, in the chest. I remember a young woman in undergrad once announcing to a large group of students,”We have to stand in solidarity with one another even when we don’t necessarily understand or agree totally with the method of engagement.” In that moment I asked myself, “Who does she mean by ‘we’?” The young Latina was attempting to bring […]

Being too invested in receiving affirmation from whiteness and white […]

The killing of eighteen-year-old Michael Brown by former Ferguson, Missouri police officer Darren Wilson has rightfully garnered national attention. It is important, however, to note that the tension between police forces and Black communities is nothing new, nor is it confined to Ferguson, Missouri.

A college campus remains divided after members of a white fraternity received no punishment for harassing members of a black sorority. Audience members including student leaders and alumni at the University of Connecticut felt disrespected by responses from some of the panelists who spoke at a town hall meeting hosted by the […]
