Chicago is experiencing its warmest weather in months. And unfortunately that means a rise in gun violence. According to the Chicago Tribune, 3 are dead and 17 wounded throughout the city overnight; including a fatal shooting literally across the street from the UIC police department.
Poor relations between the Chicago Police Department and residents in Chicago’s most embattled neighborhoods has created a climate of anger, fear and distrust; major obstacles to stemming the tide of violence in the city.
The Chicago Teachers Union is gearing up for a massive protest against the closing of 54 Chicago public schools. Thousands of parents, teachers, students, and community members are expected attend and demand a moratorium on the closures.

The family of the late Rekia Boyd could receive a $4.5 million settlement from the City of Chicago. Nearly one year ago, Boyd was gunned down by off-duty cop Dante Servin after he’d exchanged words with a group of men in the vicinity of Boyd.
Chicago city treasurer Stephanie Neely has called for a version of New York’s “Stop and Frisk” program to combat the city’s gun violence crisis. This program denies our young people of their dignity and constitutional rights, and treats law-abiding people like criminals.
The Chicago Police Department is almost certain that charges will be made later today against two suspects in the shooting death of Hadiya Pendleton.
Chicago Police are now offering a $40,000 reward for information pertaining to the shooting death of 15 year-old Hadiya Pendleton. Originally $11,000, the department was able to up the dollar amount after a flood of donations from the public.
Several people were arrested Sunday afternoon during a protest at the University of Chicago Medical Center. An estimated 50 protesters occupied the hospital, demanding that an adult trauma center be opened. There are no trauma centers on the South Side of Chicago.
19 people were shot in overnight shootings on the South and West sides of Chicago. 13 of them were wounded over a period of just 30 minutes.
