When we blame Black women for our failure to be seen as “real men” in a White racist society we only show ourselves to be immature. Our mothers, our sisters, our aunts, our girlfriends, our wives, and nieces are not our enemy.
7th grader Moses Hinton received an in-school suspension after a teacher claimed he wiped his hands on the American flag. Although the school principal is black, the Hinton family believes that the discipline was racially motivated. Was Moses unfairly punished?
Since I was a little a brown girl, I have always secretly wanted to save the world. Yes, the whole big world. To say the least, I was utterly enthralled with movies like Indian Jones and the last Crusade to the point of obscene dissidence to the 80s generational black-uplift narrative of being a lawyer […]
Now that it is Women’s Her-story month I thought I would stoke the fires with a blog about something many black women would have a problem with, but something I need to write and have been thinking about for some time . . . our love for President Barack Obama. Perhaps, not love, but our […]
Up and coming rapper Cory Gunz was arrested in New York yesterday with a loaded gun in his backpack (a crime with carries a mandatory sentence of three and a half years). This is the same law that lead to the arrest and incarceration of Lil Wayne, Ja Rule, and Prodigy of Mobb Deep. Interestingly […]
I have really big boobs. They are humongous. I’m a shade over five feet tall with enough rack for three women. They draw a ton of attention. This, I know. But just because they’re huge does not mean we all get to touch them or remark about them. Thanks. One of my mentees has been […]
What happened this week that made me imagine my father a superhero: This week, I went to the doctor to check on my blood pressure. A couple of weeks ago it was a tad bit above the normal rate and so my doctor wanted to monitor it. So, I scheduled an appointment to come in […]
I am a reality television junkie. And I don’t watch normal people reality TV like Top Chef or The Bachelor but I enjoy trashy reality TV like Basketball Wives, Love and Hip Hop and the Real Housewives of Every Outrageous City in America. March Madness helped a little but once my Blue Devils got bounced […]
So the Grammys are finally upon us. This Sunday night, pop music’s heavy-hitters will sit awkwardly in a theatre in L.A. and wait with bated breath as nameless, faceless “Grammy voters” decide which artists actually made good music over the past year or so. They will likely be completely wrong. The performances should be ok […]
I’ve decided to start a school entitled, “I Know Who You Are.” I know it’s a very weird name for a school, but it encapsulates the purpose of the school. I am going to teach little girls how to recognize predators not only the predators that walk down the street and abduct them as they […]
This past week the president of Uganda gave a statement that made many happy, but didn’t bring much gratification to my life. I’m not one that likes to accept the lesser of two evils. When people ask me if I would prefer to be hot or cold, I tell them neither, I want to be […]
Black Men being Hard together In mid-April 2009, Little Bow Wow told a “funny story”, which was over a live web-chat, about not wanting to get his haircut by a barber that he assumed was gay.  His comments sparked some controversy among gay media when his remarks were leaked. One such critique came from […]
