Like my native tongue, Wakanda bridges the cultural gap between my African ancestry and Black American life
by Antoinette Gregg Until I moved to New York City for graduate school, I had never been asked the question, “What kind of Black are you?” Growing up, there was only one kind of Black that I knew of: Geechee. A hodgepodge of Caribbean, African, and European ways of life, Geechee/Gullah is the culture, language, […]

The Black church can engage more Black millennials by bringing politics back into the pulpit
By Maya King For more than two centuries, religious institutions have sat at the intersection of pain and liberation within African-American communities. Churches like Birmingham’s Sixteenth Street Baptist and Atlanta’s Ebenezer exemplified this, giving birth to the people and movements that defined the Civil Rights Era while providing political capital and a sense of stability […]
What I learned about embracing my Blackest self from Baltimore’s IDGAF attitude
by Hess Stinson Unpacking respectability politics is a journey. Right now, I’m at a point in my journey where I can sit on the bench and catch a breather, but I know that soon I have to get up and keep on walking. I used to take most steps with my “best foot,” trying to […]
Stop expecting Black children to grow up straight & cisgender

It’s a matter of time: Resisting the enshrining of white supremacy in our collective memory
“Who is that guy, mommy?” My four-year-old was pointing at the Abraham Lincoln monument in Washington D.C. in 2013. Just the day before, a jury of six women, only one who identified as a “woman of color,” had found George Zimmerman “not guilty” in the murder of Trayvon Martin. “That’s Abraham Lincoln. He was president.”
