To parents of the revolution: Intentional time given to our children is important too
by Desmera Gatewood One of my movement mentors told me, the “revolution begins at home.” She told me this after I declined to go on a trip because I’d promised to take my daughter somewhere with her cousins. I’ve come to realize there’s nothing—no protest, board meeting, speaking engagement, convention, facilitation opportunity, panel, event […]

How learning to work with my Ancestors created a relationship of reciprocity and parental support
by Taylor Amari Little My Ancestors are my protectors. No, really. Truly ride or die. It is imperative that you know this. As you probably know, sometimes parents ain’t shit. Though this is nothing unusual of cisgender heterosexual men in U.S. society. For me, that was my father who was absent for the majority of […]
In a world where my parents let me be as free as Dwyane Wade & Gabrielle Union let Zaya
How beautiful if nothing more than to watch her sashay down the catwalk. How beautiful to hear her parents cheering for this young girl as she strikes a pose, then another, then another—each more fierce than the last. I don’t even begrudge the black fanny pack strapped over her shoulder like the worst damn fashion […]
Jordan Peele’s ‘Us’ contends with unresolved trauma, and a host of other unsettling things
This essay contains spoilers for Us. In the surface story of Us, the Wilson family travels to Santa Cruz for summer vacation and finds themselves stalked by doppelgängers in a sudden home invasion, but there is so much more to be found beneath it. Adelaide (Lupita Nyong’o) and Gabe (Winston Duke), with daughter Zora (Shahadi […]
Comic: No, you did not turn out “just fine”
by JeCorey Holder How many times have we tried to discuss the realities and impact of child abuse and trauma, often thinly-veiled as “discipline” from our parents, only to have someone jump in insisting that they “turned out just fine” despite these things happening to them as kids? Someone who claims that being beaten or […]
Associating disability with weakness made it impossible to embrace my autism
By Latonya Pennington I first learned about autistic people through the teen fiction book Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde. Focusing on a group of friends at a pop culture convention, the book is seen through the eyes of an autistic, fat, straight white girl named Taylor, and a Chinese Australian bisexual girl named Charlie. […]

The recent college admissions scandal is just a fraction of the rigged American Education System
by Daniel Johnson Regarding the abject brutality of the way the criminal justice system discards Black bodies and lives, writer Kirsten West Savali describes the practice in this way, reframing the common narrative that the criminal justice system is merely broken: “The system is not broken, it is functioning exactly as intended.” There is little […]
Delectable Negroes: On precarity, death, and the Black queer male body
by Robert Randolph, Jr., Ph.D. This essay contains discussions of sexual violence, lynching, and the serial murder of queer Black men. Writer’s Note: The Deputy Editor invited me to write about this subject and I have carried these men, the named and unnamed in my head for weeks. I blew the deadline time and time […]
How targeting Ilhan Omar instead of white supremacy furthered both anti-Semitism & Islamophobia
By Su’ad Abdul Khabeer, Chanda Prescod-Weinstein, Margari Hill, Rakel Joseph, Asha Noor, and Rebecca Pierce Last week, House Democrats passed a resolution condemning anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and white supremacy. As Black women, Muslim and Jewish, we agree that anti-Black racism, anti-Semitism, sexism and Islamophobia must be condemned. Reports of anti-Semitism are on the rise: according to the FBI, […]
How prison-based thinking warps a lack of empathy for “deserving” victims to harm the vulnerable
Editor’s Note: sexual violence and mention of rape I’ll admit it: I have a sort of macabre fascination with true crime. My fiancé is always making fun of me for it, and it’s not a trait I’m super proud of, to be honest. I recognize that how the media handles the sensational abuses they document […]
Being a “chooser” in a dating field that deems Black women undesirable
by Tracey Onyenacho I have only been on four dates in my entire life. The amount of rejections I have received when asking men out are countless. In the past, I did what I have always done and chalked the lack of interest up to the way I positioned myself in the dating field. Often, […]
