President Obama called on Congress on Monday to ban job discrimination against gay Americans. The call came as he signed an executive order doing so for workers of federal contractors. 

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The act is one of the most significant civil rights achievements in U.S. history. The law made it illegal to discriminate against citizens on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin; ending school, work and public building discrimination.

An Oregon college student is suing his university for discrimination. Jayce Marcus, who is transgender, is a sophomore at George Fox University in Newberg. He applied for on-campus housing in one of the school’s male dormitories, but was denied admission.

“The Maroon Tiger,” Morehouse College’s student newspaper, has released their version of ESPN’s “The Body Issue” in response to apprehension of HBCUs when discussing issues related to black sexuality and bodies. Out of the college’s 146 year existence, just last year the institution started to open up about black sexuality by adding a LGBT studies course to its curricula.

The nation’s first voter ID law came from a three-judge panel of the 7th Circuit in Indiana. The law was integrated into American politics in 2007, despite opposition from Democrats and the American Civil Liberties Union. One of the judges regrets it.
