httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbejJ8DJd4A&feature=fvw In 2004, humiliation, pain and torture were inflected on an Afghan grain merchant named Mohammed Shah Poor. The torturer was Sheikh Issa Al Nahyan, one of the 22 royal Sheikhs of the United Arab Emirate (U.A.E). At this point in the clip, I hope you have realized that Sheikh Issa’s accomplices are police officers. Moreover, I believe […]
The Dead Cannot Correct Them: Grief, Repressions, and Life in the US
By: Amber Butts There’s always a reason the dead had to die. This country is very practiced at explaining itself, searching the dead for a reason before it admits to killing them, rifling through whatever they left behind. Alex Pretti was thirty-seven years old, an ICU nurse in Minneapolis protesting federal immigration raids when […]
How Queerness Shapes My Identity and Advocacy
By: Obinna Tony-Francis Ochem Long before I called myself queer, I called myself gay because it was the only language I had for my attraction to men. Growing up in Nigeria, the word rarely belonged to people like me. Among young people, “gay” was less an identity than an insult, tossed around with the same […]
Black, Southern, and Queer

How We Fight Adult Supremacy in Black Communities
by Tayler Simon I remember when I was a child, I told my mom I never wanted to grow up. Adults complained about bills and errands, their days already spoken for in advance. It did not look like a fun time, moving through a script you didn’t write. Now, as an adult, I agree with […]

By Daniel Johnson Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first Black woman appointed to the Supreme Court and an appointee of former President Joe Biden, has been consistently and sharply breaking with the conservative Supreme Court, utilizing the power afforded through her dissents to issue missives, aiming those arguments at not only the conservative Supreme Court […]
Affordability as Democracy: Young Adults Want Both
by Cathy J. Cohen To say that the term affordability has become the buzzword of this political season would be an understatement. The growing prominence of the term “affordability” is evident in the press, among politicians, and even in the public’s Google searches. The political success of focusing on affordability became evident in recent Democratic […]
The Architecture of Removal: Black Immigrants, Disappearance, and the Politics of Survival in the United States
by Amber Butts Immigration policy in the United States has always enforced racial hierarchy, and the Trump administration further developed an aggressive removal process against Black immigrants. Expanded policing partnerships, broader detention authority, and rhetoric that cast immigrants as criminals and predators created conditions that pushed Black immigrants into detention and deportation at strikingly disproportionate […]
Being a Therapist When the World is on Fire
by Vanessa Anyanso I don’t know what it’s like to be a therapist during “normal times.” I, a Nigerian American born and raised in the Washington, D.C. area, moved to Minneapolis in Fall 2019 to start my doctoral program in Counseling Psychology. The world shut down for the pandemic in March 2020. In May 2020, […]
Print Never Left: Black Writers on Archiving and Self-Published Print Media
by Dr. Ravynn K. Stringfield Social media is currently flooded with messages from people encouraging others online to “get into print media” or “go analog,” while simultaneously bemoaning the loss of politically aware print media that centered marginalized voices—RIP Bitch Media—and a dearth of media that represent our experiences. However, for Black artists, writers and […]
