On Wednesday, the Black Youth Project released its first ever report on Black Millennials entitled  “Black Millennials in America” survey data. The project is dedicated to providing a more nuanced understanding of the lived experiences and political attitudes of Black Millennials.  We believe that black lives matter and that we must represent the complexity of […]

by Raymond Williams In the Black community, the subject of bisexuality is encircled by a contentious debate filled with hypocrisy, ignorance and misinformation. More than 40 percent of LGBT+ people of color consider themselves bisexual, but Black people bear a greater burden of consequences when identifying as such. According to the Human Rights Campaign, 77 […]

by Khaaliq Crowder Growing up, my pop culture interests were always unapologetically aligned with everything Black. From owning CDs by late 90s/early 2000s artists such as Destiny’s Child, Aaliyah, and Janet Jackson, to watching marathons of sitcoms like Moesha and Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, to being introduced to the classic group The Jackson 5 via […]

Did the Chinese government issue a crotchety “get-off-my-lawn” to hip-hop appreciators and contributors to hip-hop culture in the Asian country? GenForward, a survey of the Black Youth Project at the University of Chicago with the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, is a bimonthly report of racially and ethnically diverse young people’s perspectives. The latest report, for October 2017, entitled “The ‘Woke’ Generation? Millennial Attitudes on Race in the US”, captured some profound insights on what […]

Last week, I was banned from Facebook for the second time. That this has only happened twice in seven years is a small miracle, given Facebook’s well-documented penchant for censoring the words of Black thinkers and writers, and my history of publishing some of my most controversial thoughts as statuses on the platform. This time, […]

Consider how much death and destruction has been permitted that there is even a such thing as “the shooter,” in quotations. Terror has become such a commonly wielded weapon that “the shooter,” the terrorist, is now an archetype, ready to appear at any moment, anywhere, for the foreseeable future and beyond. And every time he […]

News stories about GOP women feeling “betrayed” by the Republican Party have been breaking since late 2016. Sometimes the breakups come with drama and fanfare. At other times, GOP women, like Hawaiian Rep. Beth Fukumoto, choose clear and measurable actions that inevitably lead them to seek political asylum with the Democratic Party. But, what do […]

Findings in a new GenForward Survey  conducted in late October suggest that support for Donald Trump could be predicted by feelings of “white vulnerability,” a measure which evaluates respondents’ belief in the idea that “white Americans are increasingly in a vulnerable position regarding both their economic positioning and general status in a society.” The study […]

By: Associated Press The oldest millennials (AP) — nearing 20 when airplanes slammed into New York City’s Twin Towers – are old enough to remember the relative economic prosperity of the 1990s, and when a different Clinton was running for president. The nation’s youngest adults – now nearing 20 themselves – find it hard to […]

In a few weeks, I will return for my second year as a counselor at a weeklong summer camp for kids. During training, we were asked to ponder what the world would lose if by some mysticism all children were to disappear, with the intent to hone in on the importance of our work with […]
