The two most common criticisms of the Black Lives Matter movement have to be: 1) It implies that black lives matter most and 2) If black lives really mattered, black-on-black crime wouldn’t be an issue. There are easy defenses to both of these claims, but the questions seem to persist. The latest person to ask them […]

Former NFL linebacker Ray Lewis was honored with a statue. The Baltimore Ravens unveiled the statue outside of the M&T Bank Stadium early Thursday morning.

School district administrator turned-activist-turned mayoral candidate DeRay Mckesson’s recent interview with the New York Times conveys the hope (and simultaneous frustration) behind his bid to become mayor of the beleagured city of Baltimore, Maryland. McKesson pins his dismal poll numbers on voters’ (particularly those within the city’s organizing circles) inability to conceive of someone like him […]

Colin Kaepernick did nothing wrong. I’ll repeat that as many times as I have to until people get it. Despite that fact, the former [and hopefully soon-to-be current] NFL player is being crucified after his protests of the National Anthem last season. NFL teams are avoiding him as if he has something contagious and are electing […]

I had originally intended to spend this post-Super Bowl morning’s blog either talking about Beyonce’s halftime performance or pitching my latest idea: an edition of the Bible inspired by NFL players. (Think: the Book of Deion Sanders aka Leon Sandcastle or the Gospel according to St. Ray Lewis.) I imagine someone else is already stoking […]

Any of you following the NFL might have been slightly shocked when the details of Plaxico Burress’ sentence became public.  Even I was surprised by the severity of his sentence, and I’ve been watching NFL players tango with the (in)justice system since well before, um, Ray Lewis?  For those of you who have not diligently […]

By L.N. Lewis I visit a certain website almost monthly, reading names and cross-checking news stories. It is a stark spreadsheet, a database of nightmares reaching back to May 1, 2013, titled killedbypolice.net. For April 2018, it lists 418 names. Among them: Shukri Ali Said, aged 36; Elijah James Smith, 20-years-old; and Brenda Jenette Harrison-Bumbray, […]

By Mark Matlock The possibility of weed legalization can be exciting to young people like me. Especially since our country’s current policies regarding weed have increased discrimination already fueled by the War on Drugs. But excitement can make us forget that being able to consume weed doesn’t get rid of the overt anti-Blackness that comes […]
