Editor’s Note: This month at BYP, we will be exploring Black Liberation & Organizing, and we are interested in publishing works that address these topics. How do we hold politicians accountable to Black communities? Is that even possible? What should be our role in the electoral politics? What does abolition look like in practice? What […]

As grating as “Old Town Road” and its endless stream of remixes has become, there was always something about Lil Nas X that I just couldn’t help rooting for. That thing was substantiated when he posted a series of tweets confirming his queerness, although he didn’t use the term. He did, however, claim to be […]

This past Saturday, the U.S. Open final between Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka concluded with Osaka’s win, marking it the first grand slam win for 20-year-old Haitian-Japanese player. However, the U.S. Open final ended with the umpire, Carlos Ramos, penalizing Serena Williams for calling him a “thief.” The incident re-ignited conversations on the intersection of […]

by Indigo I could not have been older than six or so. It was the first time I can remember any indication from my family that queerness was something I would not be afforded the space to explore or embrace. This first memory of anti-queerness was a short conversation between my mother and I. In […]
