Yup. Non-profit culture and performative activism perpetuate ableism and anti-Blackness
In May, I quit my paid job as a counselor/ organizer in Oakland, CA. I was burned out, depressed, and incredibly frustrated with the conditions that Black folks are exposed to and expected to accept while working within social justice organizations. I had health insurance, but my co-pay was $60 and it didn’t cover mental […]
Black women speak to being socialized to fear their own pleasure, & what we can do about it
By Caroline Colvin For a subset of society whose bodies are so sexualized, so desired, and so sought-after, Black women and femmes as a whole feel a substantial amount of shame when it comes to our sexuality. When you’re a Black woman or femme, pop culture encourages you to be the video vixen — or, […]
Jim Brown thinks Colin Kaepernick should choose between football and activism
As a Cleveland Browns player, Jim Brown was once one of the most prolific athletes in the country. After football, he moved on to acting, social justice work and making himself the face of the black “get off my porch!” delegation. Brown has continued to make a name for himself in recent years by being […]
Another retired Black NFL player is telling Kaepernick to be ‘low-key’ about his activism
Colin Kaepernick did nothing wrong. I’ll repeat that as many times as I have to until people get it. Despite that fact, the former [and hopefully soon-to-be current] NFL player is being crucified after his protests of the National Anthem last season. NFL teams are avoiding him as if he has something contagious and are electing […]

The current mayor, Rahm Emanuel, and his supporters are continuing to push a narrative which supports the divestment from Black and Brown Chicagoans […]
Liberation is a 3-step process: Broadening activism’s scope in the wake of the Movement for Black Lives
Contrary to popular belief, the Movement for Black Lives is not solely about police brutality. Bigger than body cameras and electoral politics, the Movement is about Black liberation and freedom for all Black people. Liberation and freedom are unconventional in the sense that the system under which society currently operates makes those two realities impossible. […]

12-year-old Marley Dias continues to impress and make us all wish we would’ve done more with our childhood. After demanding more diversity in school reading lists, Dias’ #1000BlackGirlBooks took off. The effort saw more than 8,000 donations and resulted in books being donated by the GrassROOTS Community Foundation to far more schools than originally anticipated. As […]
New Media, Activism, and the Origins of BYP100
In a new working paper entitled “And then the Zimmerman Verdict Happens,” Nathan Jamel Riemer discusses the development of the Black Youth Project 100 (BYP100, the Black Youth Project’s sister, activist organization) amidst developments in new media and a persistently hostile and anti-black racial environment in the United States. The paper, number 3 in a […]

Diverse groups of people from the area and other states have looked on at Charleston during this difficult time with a common sense of […]
Feature: Nurturing black youth activism
The following post is from the Chicago Reporter. It was written by Katherine Mirani. By: Katherine Mirani Some of Charlene Carruthers’ strongest memories from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago are of visiting the public aid office with her mother. Caseworkers spoke condescendingly from a desk so high it was difficult to […]
