A suburban Detroit man who shot and killed a teenage girl on his front porch as she sought help after a car wreck has been sentenced to 17 years behind bars. Theodore Wafer was convicted of second-degree murder in the Nov. 2 death of 19-year-old Renisha McBride. McBride was unarmed at the time. 

A jury convicted a suburban Detroit man of second-degree murder and manslaughter on Thursday in the killing of a 19-year-old unarmed woman who sought help after a car wreck on his porch last year. Theodore Wafer claimed self-defense and said that he feared for his life.

A suburban Detroit man who killed an unarmed teen on his porch said he didn’t know his shotgun was loaded. Ted Wafer, 55, shot and killed 19-year-old Renisha McBride during the early hours of Nov. 2. He has claimed self defense under Michigan’s Stand Your Ground law.

Theodore Wafer, the man who shot Renisha McBride, will be in a Wayne County court today. A judge will determine whether Wafer will stand trial for second-degree murder and manslaughter. Last month, Wafer shot McBride.  He told authorities that someone had come onto his porch and knocked on his door in the very early morning.
