By Gloria Oladipo I am tired of my white neighbors watching me, my family, and other residents of color. I’m anxious that their surveillance will get my Black family hurt, especially with the unchecked power of law enforcement in our community. They take pictures of us in the park. They mount “Blue Lives Matter” signs […]

Before I read it in Laurence Mabuya’s […]

Barely a month has passed since I wrote about appropriation and the vampiric nature of whiteness, specifically as it pertains to Black art and aesthetic. My focus was white artists and their simultaneous disavowal and infiltration of rap and hip-hop, and my purpose was to illustrate the pattern of how white society appropriates Black art […]

This essay briefly mentions sexual and reproductive violences. A group of Trump-worshipping, MAGA hat-wearing white boys from Covington Catholic High School surrounded and taunted an Indigenous elder with the racist, xenophobic, and nationalist chant, “Build the wall!” last week. But somehow the mainstream media has framed the boys as innocent victims, despite the fact that […]

Satan […]

by Taylor Amari Little My Ancestors are my protectors. No, really. Truly ride or die. It is imperative that you know this. As you probably know, sometimes parents ain’t shit. Though this is nothing unusual of cisgender heterosexual men in U.S. society. For me, that was my father who was absent for the majority of […]

by JeCorey Holder After years and years of whitewashed characters, white actors in various forms of racially insensitive make-up effects, and nonsense like Zoe Saldana as Nina Simone… it finally happened. After what seemed like an eternity after its initial announcement and following what seemed like an unstoppable train of hype leading up to […]

By Ashley Nkadi Do you remember Abigail Fisher? If you are drawing a blank, allow me to refresh your memory:  Abigail Fisher is the white woman whose college rejection was heard around the world, mainly because she basically grabbed the world’s biggest megaphone and wailed into it like a toddler. When Fisher was denied entry […]

By Lainface At this point in human history, college has become damn-near mandatory for acquiring employment and, dare I say, being validated as a functional adult in our society. The “prestige” of attending an institution of higher education yields visions of flying graduation caps, late nights studying in the library, and long, long, looong walks […]

We’re in a weird political moment. In the past two weeks, three senior Trump administrative officials have left their posts and Anthony Scaramucci, the newly appointed (and swiftly fired) White House communications director went on a profane rant about his White House colleagues.

This article was originally published in the Chicago Maroon. “If I were you, I would just go to whatever state school you’ve already been accepted to. The University of Chicago is really a tough institution, and I’m not quite sure you’d do well there, if we’re being honest.” I felt my heart beating fast, my […]
