Today, people from all over the world will gather to celebrate the life an legacy of Nelson Mandela, Nelson Mandela International Day is a day of service celebrated on July 18, Mandela’s birthday. Mandela, who was the former president of South Africa and a Nobel Peace Prize recipient, died at 95 on Dec. 5, 2013. 

According to his former wife Winnie, Nelson Mandela remains quite ill. Tubes used to clear his lungs and prevent infection make it impossible for the civil rights leader to speak, and he uses his face to communicate. He remains sensitive to any germs and has to literally be kept sterile.

Today is the 95th birthday of the incomparable Nelson Mandela. And – coinciding with this great day – we are happy to report that Mandela’s health is reportedly improving!

As the world continues to pray for a speedy recovery for Nelson Mandela, his wife – Graca Machel – has expressed thanks to Africa and the World for “bringing us love, comfort and hope” at such a difficult time.
