A legislative committee in Florida took a major step toward clarifying the state’s much debated “stand your ground” defense on Monday. The committee approved restrictions on its use and clarified that the statute does not permit “vigilantism” by neighborhood watch activists.
New York Judge Shira Scheindlin has ruled that the city’s Stop and Frisk policy is unconstitutional: “No one should live in fear of being stopped whenever he leaves his home to go about the activities of daily life.”

Police departments in Seattle have revised their policies on when police can use force. The changes come as part of a settlement with the Justice Department over findings that officers used frequent excessive, unconstitutional force on suspects. But roughly 125 police officers have filed a lawsuit challenging the new rules.
