An Arizona charter school is being criticized for teaching what opposing members call “racist” and “sexist” lessons in its classrooms.  Two books by Cleon Skousen, who is often cited by uber conservative talk show host Glenn Beck and the Tea Party movement, are required reading for Heritage Academy seniors in Mesa. 

After a wave of student-led protests on campus, officials at Washington and Lee University have agreed to remove Confederate flags from the main chamber of its Lee Chapel. The changes came after a group of black students protested that the historic Virginia school was unwelcoming to minorities.

The National School Boards Association (NSBA) has partnered with New Regency, Penguin Books and the filmmakers of 12 Years a Slave to distribute copies of the film, book and study guide to public high schools in America. The initiative, headed by Montel Williams will be launched nationwide in September.

One of New York City’s most prestigious prep schools has apologized after screening a satirical movie about slavery. The Dalton School showed “C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America” to sophomores at a presentation of history projects on Monday. The movie portrayed the south as the winners of the Civil War and treated slavery as comical.
