  A Change.org petition is calling for the U.S. government to acknowledge slaves with a memorial. The petition, created by Craig Nessan, urges representatives to construct an African American slave memorial to acknowledge the contributions, trials and tribulations of our ancestors to the country. 

  The United States Patent and Trademark Office has canceled the Washington Redskins trademark registration. The decision comes after numerous campaigns forged by Native Americans and their supporters calling for the team to change their name. The trademark office called the football team’s name “disparaging to Native Americans.”

According to a study released by a Washington D.C. advocacy group, at least 5,000 of the District’s poorest children are not receiving adequate mental health treatment. The study, released by the Children’s Law Center, attempts to assess how well the District is caring for the city’s 96,000 children insured by Medicaid.

Karyn Washington, student at Morgan State University and founder and creator of the website For Brown Girls, has died of an apparent suicide. She was 22. 

“Scandal” star Kerry Washington and her NFL player husband Nnamdi Asomugha are reportedly expecting a child. According to a close friend, Washington is about 16 weeks. This will be the 36-year-old actress’ first child.
