Vanderbilt Divinity School in Nashville, Tn., has appointed it’s first openly-gay black female dean. Described as a “liberal oasis,” the institution appointed Emilie Townes as the 16th dean of the school.
Eboni Boykin spent her life living in homeless shelters. Sometimes she even slept in cars with her mother and younger siblings. Despite bouncing around several schools in Mississippi and Missouri, Boykin now calls Columbia University her home.
The family of Olympic track and field legend Jesse Owens is one step closer in their fight to once again rename a Chicago school after him. The building had been named after Owens since 1980, and the family called the change “disrespectful.”
A total of 50 Head Start programs that serve 3,200 low-income preschoolers have shut down due to the halt in government operations. According to a spokeswoman for Head Start, another 11 are set to close by Friday if funding isn’t restored.
An Arkansas school district is refusing to allow three students to attend school. While reviewing records over the summer, officials in the Pea Ridge school district found an evaluation of a student stating that his mother and sister were HIV-positive. Administrators notified the student’s foster family, saying they could not return to school until the family proved a negative HIV status for the children.
A petition on change.org is aiming to rename a high school in Florida named after a Ku Klux Klan leader. Nathan B. Forrest High School is comprised of mostly African American students.
Parents of the Coatesville Area School District are demanding that two top administrators be fired after racist texts have surfaced. In a series of texts messages, Superintendent Richard Como and high school athletic director Jim Donato referred to students and faculty with the n-word. The two officials also used demeaning language to describe Jewish people, women and other minorities in the exchange of more than a dozen messages.
