A young girl who faced expulsion for her natural hair has been allowed to remain enrolled in her school.  12-year-old Vanessa VanDyke says that school officials gave her one week to decide whether to change her hair or leave Faith Christian Academy in Orlando. Vanessa has attended the parochial school since the third grade. 

The composer of Princeton University’s orchestra has created a ballad in Trayvon Martin’s memory. Anthony D.J. Branker, who will celebrate his 25th year as Princeton’s founder and director of the program in jazz studies, composed the piece of music after being “moved to the core” upon hearing about Trayvon’s death.

Nelson Mandela will be laid to rest at his ancestral village of Qunu on Dec. 15. The village is located in the Eastern Cape. Mandela’s funeral will follow a national week of mourning for the historical figure, and will include an open-air memorial service at Johannesburg’s Soccer City stadium on Dec. 10.
