  For many black children, finding the support they need in order to become successful is more than challenging. According to a study conducted by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, Illinois is the worst state in the country to raise black children. 

  Debra Harrell, the South Carolina woman who was arrested for allowing her daughter to play in a park while she worked, has been fired from her job. Harrell, who cannot afford childcare, was working at McDonald’s when she was arrested. The company has not issued a statement regarding her firing.

Earlier we mentioned how the government shutdown affects 800,000 workers, but the move also really puts a strain on low-income mothers. Support for mothers and children does not qualify as a “mandatory expenditure,” absolving it of protection from the fallout.
