Derrick Gordon, a sophomore at the University of Massachusetts, has become the first openly gay player in men’s Division I college basketball. A few days ago, Gordon came out to his family and teammates. He has now gone public with his sexuality.
An Oregon college student is suing his university for discrimination. Jayce Marcus, who is transgender, is a sophomore at George Fox University in Newberg. He applied for on-campus housing in one of the school’s male dormitories, but was denied admission.Â

Andraya Williams, who is a member of the transgender community, was headed to class after using the ladies’ washroom at the Overcash Building at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte when the incident occurred.Â
An Indianapolis teen has been awarded the prestigious Gates Millennium Scholarship. Alex Dunlap, 16, who attends Broad Ripple High School, is one of only 1,000 students in the country to receive the honor. She’ll be graduating a year early in May.Â

Young workers who are stuck in low-wage positions have taken a more active role in protests and advocacy initiatives to increase the living wage. In the past year, millennials have put increased pressure on low wage job providers to increase the minimum wage.Â
The painting of new Vanderbilt football coach Derek Mason will be redone after a petition was started in protest of the image. The painting, commissioned by Fant Smith, did not go over well with the school’s NAACP chapter who felt the mural reminded them of historically racist imagery.Â
