A Black Queer Joy Visual Without A Witness
by: Amari Murray The first time I noticed the change, it was in the mirror. Not my reflection – hers. We were getting ready to go out, Beyonce’s “Diva” spilling from a speaker on the dresser while the bass vibrated softly through the bedroom walls. Clothes covered nearly every inch of the bed: a black […]
How Rave Culture Became a Sanctuary for Queer Nigerians
By Ugonna-Ora Owoh When Leo, a 28-year-old bisexual man living in Lagos, Nigeria attended a rave for the first time in October 2022, he was in disbelief. “It was my first time seeing so many queer persons in one place,” he explains. “They felt free, nobody was worried about who was watching them or attacking […]
The Sensual Betrayal of ‘Sinners’
by Michael J. Ivory, Jr. The day I told my Pentecostal preacher parents I didn’t want to attend church with them anymore, I remember feeling a profound freedom. For once, I chose my Black queer body’s peace over witnessing my existence being raked over hellfire coals. No more shallowed breath at the altar. No more […]
Erotic Communion: Black Women’s Pleasure in ‘Sinners’
by Juahl Ganaway In a scene ripped from The Sugar Shack, the character Pearline (played by the stunning Jayme Lawson) stalks across the stage purring the lyrics to “Pale, Pale, Moon,” the Brittany Howard-penned song that feels more like an invocation than a performance. “I wanna sing Like I hear the crickets do I wanna […]

Get yo ass up, Drew! My alarm rang, a nasty, raggedy rang, almost soundin’ like it was yellin’ at me. Get yo ass up, […]
We are more than just good or bad: How the God of the Binary fails Black people
By Itoro Udofia I grew up under the tutelage of The God of the Binary. He was forever in opposition to a ubiquitous outside force. He was the Good opposed to Evil. The Strong opposed to Weak. Right opposed to Wrong. There I stood, an eager and inquisitive girl child, making mistakes and looking for […]
The Black Lunatic
A history of forced institutionalization in service of white supremacy
Keeping Black history will always be necessary, but it takes a toll
I imagine that I would be a historian, a social librarian of sorts, whenever Black liberation is realized, and I imagine that my role wouldn’t look much different from the work I am already doing: Helping to keep Black histories. For as long as I’ve been aware of my Blackness as a threat to whiteness […]
Black Joy is movement work
by Gloria Oladipo Black joy is revolutionary. Full stop. Oftentimes, white people misinterpret Black liberation movements as movements only about pain, movements only about anger, only about violence and death. And, of course, they involve those things. But joy is foundational. Joy is fundamental. Joy is what we’re fighting for. Joy is what we’re fighting […]
