Faced with commercialization, the Black Punk community turns to its past for a guide to keep resisting
By Monika Estrella Negra The majority of the Black punks I have talked to were drawn to (or got lost in) the Punk scene in order to escape the rigidity and heteronormative idealism of traditional Black political organizing. This is not to infer that all Black punks identify with far leftist views, nor does it […]
The endless appropriation of MLK and white supremacy’s need to rewrite historical narratives
Barely a month has passed since I wrote about appropriation and the vampiric nature of whiteness, specifically as it pertains to Black art and aesthetic. My focus was white artists and their simultaneous disavowal and infiltration of rap and hip-hop, and my purpose was to illustrate the pattern of how white society appropriates Black art […]
The audacity of Aretha Franklin—a voice for Black liberation
by Tiffany Hobbs I hope Jesus doesn’t look like the white man on the wall. That flowy-locked iteration of the Messiah they wanted Black people to believe in would find his alabaster skin colored with surprise as Ms. Aretha Franklin entered the gates and demanded payment—her heavenly reward—upfront. Her blessings must be plentiful, as she […]

Dodge bastardizes Dr. King sermon to try and sell cars in Super Bowl ad
The greatest irony produced on Super Bowl Sunday had nothing to do with the game or the lackluster and unimaginative halftime show by some guy named Justin. Interestingly enough, it was produced when Dodge ran a commercial for its Ram line of trucks, touting ideals of service as an excerpt from Dr. Martin Luther King […]

By Jay Connor This summer, rapper Logic released his highly-anticipated third album, Everybody, to the delight of fans, cash registers, and Def Jam alike. Bolstered by its buoyant lead single “Black Superman”, Everybody elbowed Chris Stapleton’s From A Room: Volume 1 the hell out the way to debut at No. 1 in the country, with […]
Why I can’t hold onto the gospel of Pastor Kim Burrell
By: Kelvin L. Easiley, Jr. Where does one seek solace when faith fails? Where do the lost find shelter when the leaders that claim to love them preach “death and hell fire” for the simple act of existing? When the music that once soothed and brought peace only sounds like a cacophony of chaos and […]
On Kim Burrell and why ‘theological violence’ has no place in Black Liberation
By: George M. Johnson No one is free unless the black Trans woman is free. I imagine these are the words that will ring out of the mouths of every preacher and Black person in this nation when we finally reach the day of liberation. A day that will likely never come in my lifetime, […]
Chicago Police Have Been Spying on Activists Since 2014 Or Maybe Longer
In the most un-surprising, surprising news thus far, it seems like the Chicago police department has been monitoring the actions and online communication of protests groups and community organizations after a white cop named Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri shot Michael Brown, an unarmed Black teenager.

Why aren’t we talking about the death of Victor White III?
The following piece is from The Grio. It was written by Mwende Katwiwa. By: Mwende Katwiwa Most Americans are familiar with Harry Houdini. Houdini earned such notoriety for his famous escape acts that to this day criminals who get loose from their handcuffs are often described as having “Houdinied” their way out. In New Iberia, Louisiana, however, […]
