How We Fight Adult Supremacy in Black Communities
by Tayler Simon I remember when I was a child, I told my mom I never wanted to grow up. Adults complained about bills and errands, their days already spoken for in advance. It did not look like a fun time, moving through a script you didn’t write. Now, as an adult, I agree with […]
My daughter saves me from my anxieties with the embrace of her little arms
by Donnie Moreland It’s the eve of what folks are calling the “most important presidential election of our lives.” I’m being told to prepare. I’m being told to panic. I strap both ends of my cloth mask around my ears to drop my ballot at a county library. This is the second time I’m having […]

‘Mixed-ish’ and the anti-Black myth of post-racial insulated societies
Perhaps due to my own intentional insulation inside of a cultish virtual world of angry Black radicals, last week I witnessed an overwhelmingly negative response on social media to the trailer for mixed-ish, ABC’s upcoming black-ish spinoff. Originally conceived as an episode of black-ish, mixed-ish will focus on Rainbow Johnson’s (Tracee Ellis Ross) childhood growing […]

How tourists make cultures like Salvador’s into “exotic” commodities for their consumption
by Kathleen Anaza In the old tale of tourism, when the needs of a city’s residents are leveraged against the wants of its visitors, it’s the residents who lose. The recent Fyre Festival scam is a prime example of unequal power in tourism interests. A con man from the United States finessed hundreds of celebrities, […]
