Jay Z buys Robinson Cano $34,000 watch, investigated for unethical practices
Just as the star is digging himself out of the hole created by his affiliation with Barneys New York, it looks like Jay Z has gotten himself in more hot water.
The rapper-turned-entrepreneur gifted a $34,000 watch to New York Yankees free agent Robinson Cano on his 31st birthday. The five-time All-Star received the limited-edition Classic Fusion Shawn Carter watch by Hublot during a party in Belgium on Oct. 22.
The union’s regulations prohibit agents from offering “any money, or any other thing of value” to players to help sway them to become clients. Agents, however, can dish out gifts to players who are already clients, but they must disclose to the union in writing any gifts valued at more than $500. Sources said Jay Z could be subject to disciplinary action if he’s found in violation, but “it is not expected to be severe.”
Jay Z’s camp had not issued any comments on the matter. Earlier this year, Hov announced that he would be representing Cano under his new company Roc Nation Sports. Cano stands to land one of the league’s most wealthiest contracts.
