Man who served six years in prison acquitted of killing son
A New York man has been acquitted of killing his infant son after the state’s highest court granted him a new trial.
Adrian Thomas served six years behind bars, but after seven hours of deliberating, Rensselaer County jurors declared him a free man.
Prosecutors had argued Thomas threw his 4-month-old son down on a bed in frustration in September 2008. He was convicted in 2009 of second-degree murder.
But the state Court of Appeals ordered a new trial, citing heavy-handed tactics by investigators who interrogated Thomas for almost nine hours.
Thomas’ defense lawyer relied on testimony from outside medical experts to show the baby died of a bacterial infection and not at the hands of his father.
Hopefully Thomas can heal over the tragic loss of his son, and six years behind bars.
