This year McDonald’s will be open on Christmas day. “Starting with Thanksgiving, ensure your restaurants are open throughout the holidays,” reads the Nov. 8 memo from McDonald’s USA Chief Operating Officer Jim Johannesen. “Our largest holiday opportunity as a system is Christmas Day.”

But at least that means thousands of minimum wage employees will get overtime pay, right? Wrong! McDonald’s spokeswoman Heather Oldani said, “when our company-owned restaurants are open on the holidays, the staff voluntarily sign up to work. There is no regular overtime pay.” Apparently it’s not bad enough to pay your employees a wage so small they can’t afford Christmas, now they have to work on Christmas Day for that same low pay.

That means employees like Tyree Johnson, who works a 2 different McDonald’s just to afford an apartment at a single-room occupancy hotel, and has been making minimum wage FOR 20 YEARS, won’t even get to enjoy a day off with his family. Meanwhile, McDonald’s paid  then- CEO Jim Skinner $8.75 million last year. For Tyree to earn that he’s have to work 1 MILLION HOURS!

McDonald’s had a profit growth of 135% from 2007-2011, but these scrooges won’t share it with their less fortunate employees. Instead of a paid vacation day gift, they get a $8 dollar a hour lump of coal for Xmas. Why? Because making them work on Christmas day could mean a extra $84 million under Ronald’s tree. “Snacks Kill”, in more ways than one .
