Pastor resigns after telling congregation about same-sex marriage
Bishop Allyson D. Nelson Abrams stepped down from her position as pastor of Zion Progressive Baptist Church in Detroit after revealing that she was married to a woman.
Bishop Abrams married Bishop Emeritus Diana Williams in March, but wasn’t ready to share it with the public yet.
“I could have been like so many people are and lied and said it’s not true,” Abrams, 43, said. ”But that’s not how I was raised and, as a Christian, I was always taught to be a truthful individual. So when it came up I said, ‘OK. I need to be honest with my congregation and tell them truth about what was a great event for me.”’
She informed her congregation of her married and resignation on October 6. Abrams stepped down because she did not want to be a distraction. Many of the members showed support of Abrams.
Abrams, also resigned for her position as co-editor of “The Baptist Progress,” a nationally published magazine.
