It is very clear that the entertainment industry has an issue with race and racial representation across genres. Actors Kerry Washington (Scandal) and Aziz Ansari (Master of None) sat down for the fourth season of PBS SoCal’s and Variety’s Actors on Actors team to discuss how the lack of diversity of voices, writers, and talent in the television and film industries affects their careers.
What could you possibly get when you put Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey in the same brainstorming room? You get magic, excellence, and prestige of the highest degree, and that is exactly what is happening with the United State of Women Summit at the White House.
So far, 2016 has been a wonderful year for Black woman seizing their own opportunities. Early this spring, Kelly Rowland announced that she plans on starting a makeup line for dark-skinned women. Shea Moisture is taking a stand against the racism in the beauty industry. Recently, it was announced that Kerry Washington and Viola Davis are launching independent production companies. Take a moment to embrace all this Black girl magic.

The 1991 hearings involving the public accusation from law professor Anita Hill toward then-Supreme Court Justice nominee Clarence Thomas is ripe for exploration because of how it explicitly deals with conversations of race, gender, and sexual politics that have reached a fever pitch recently. Unfortunately, while the film, Confirmation, which aired on HBO this past weekend, is well-made, it’s more concerned with extolling the facts rather than dealing with the nuance behind them. Once the credits rolled I was left with the feeling I watched an artistically and intellectually hollow Wikipedia entry come to life.
Hillary Clinton has had her fair share of issues on the campaign trail. Many of which have been her repeated issues with Black voters who have approached her about her stances on key issues facing them. Even amidst all that, Kerry Washington, Viola Davis, and Shonda Rhimes (and Shondland veteran Ellen Pompeo) say they are standing with Hillary Clinton in this presidential campaign.
HBO has released the first trailer for their upcoming series, Confirmation. The series will tell the story of Anita Hill (Kerry Washington) as she goes through the process of giving her testimony during Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’ confirmation hearings of his alleged sexual harassment.
Kerry Washington accepted the Vanguard Award at this weekend’s GLAAD Media Awards and her speech brought down the house.
“We can’t say that we believe in each other’s fundamental humanity and then turn a blind eye to the reality of each others’ existence and the truth of each other’s hearts. We must be allies. And we must be allies in this business because to be represented is to be humanized. And as long as anyone, anywhere is being made to feel less human, our very definition of humanity is at stake and we are all vulnerable,” she told the crowd.

For many, today marks the beginnings of finals week, a slew of tests given at the end of the semester wherein students attempt to coherently regurgitate everything they learned last night while cramming. In this tradition, I’d like to assign several essay questions to a few folks who have some explaining to do. You know what they say: you can take the student out of the school, but you can’t take the school out of the student. Actually, “they” don’t say that at all. Who is “they,” anyway?
Each essay should be 8 – 10 double-spaced pages and cite at least 5 non-Wikipedia sources. Plagiarism is for suckas.
After the jump, check out the “student”, major, and essay topic.
