In recent years, Marvel Comics has made a considerable effort to diversify its characters. We just covered how America Chavez, a queer Latina woman, was getting her own solo-series a couple of weeks ago. Coincidentally, that’s around the same time that the publisher started to get hit hard in the sales department.
Marvel Comics just released the first issue of a series highlighting a queer Latina who travels dimensional portals and punches Hitler. Has your brain overloaded yet? If it hasn’t, the solo series, entitled “America,” is also being written by a queer Latina.
There’s long been a stereotype that the majority of individuals who make up the nerd population are extremely out of touch with women. This is clearly false as many women consider themselves to be nerds. But, even while that’s the case, it seems that we can’t get far enough from that age-old cliche before someone drops the ball and reminds us that, when it comes to the imagery and graphics so often attributed to ‘nerd culture’, there’s still a lot of work to be done.
